My Pneumothorax - Post Surgery Report
If you visit the training section of this website, you'll see that I've been pretty active between my two lung surgeries, and after the latest surgery.

Between my two surgeries, I finished an uncountable number of running road races (PBs - 20:13 5k, 42:40 10k, 1:34 1/2 mary - hopefully I will kill those times in 2005), numerous triathlons, some bike time trials with my roadie buddies, 2 ironmans (Ironman USA 2000, Ironman Austria 2001), and my first ultra run (The Toronto Ultra 50k). After recovering from my second surgery, I finished Ironman USA in 2002.

Based on my experiences, you can return to full athletic activities after pneumothorax surgery. My only caveat is that you might experience some loss of lung capacity when really pushing your limits (i.e. above your lactate threshold). But I dont know how much of that is in my head so take it FWIW.

Whether you're in hospital waiting for your surgery or convalescing at home, hopefully you can remember my story and know that you will shortly be able to return to full activities. And if you don't believe me, remember that both Lance Armstrong and Greg LeMond had lung surgeries (in which parts of their lungs were removed) and went on to win the Tour de France. 'Nuff said.
