    About Clive

I've been a runner all my life. Running to school, running to soccer practice, running away from kids that wanted to beat me up ... you get the point. I took up cross-country running in high school and was actually pretty good, placing in the top 50 at the all-Ontario cross-country championships (OFSAA).

It wasn't until my 1st year of university (while doing my Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Toronto) that I decided to try my luck at a local road race. It was a 10k - The Sunnybrook Hospital Run for Research. Thinking back, I did okay. Around 41 minutes. It's quite a hilly course with a long grueling uphill midway through the course.

I was hooked. Unfortunately, it was around this time that I started to experience spontaneous collapses of my left lung. For more details, click on the link.

After recovering from the surgery, athletics sort of took a back seat to my studies. Then, one day in 3rd year, I decided to walk up the stairs from the first to third floor in the Wallberg building to attend a class. When I arrived I was so out of breath that I said to myself ... "I must start running tomorrow". And I did.

Running took me to the sport of triathlon. Although I hadn't swum or biked since I was a child, I decided to enter the Barrie Triathlon armed with my speedo and mountain bike. I finished. And although I was dead tired, I decided I liked this triathlon thingie and decided to enter more that summer. And then I discovered Ironman ...

Ironman is a long distance triathlon - 3.8km swim, 180km bike, 42.2 km run. That's a long way to drive. I got interested to do one while watching the 1999 Ironman World Championships from Hawaii on TV. Gotta try me one of those. And I did. After a year of training hard I finished IM-USA in Lake Placid (thanks for the Adirondacks) in 13:47:25. It was hard and had lots of ups and downs. But I finished.

After recuperating from IM-USA, I decided to train for another Ironman in 2001 - Ironman Austria. What a trip and race. I finished again, and in 100°C+ conditions PB'd by over 45 minutes to finish in 13:01:28. Unfortunately, upon returning home my right lung collapsed and needed surgery. Oddly enough, the surgery was on September 11, 2001.

So after recovering from another surgery, I completed Ironman USA in 2002. It's been a great ride. But with the birth of my baby girl Abigail in January 2003, I've decided to go back to my roots and try and get back some of running speed. If I see you at the track or races, make sure to stop me and say hi.

    See you at the races.
